It’s time for one more DSLR shootout. This time it’s the Canon 60D vs Canon Rebel T2i (aka Rebel 550D).

Canon has done something different with the development and release of the 60D. The name “Canon 60D” really belongs to a model that is an upgrade of the Canon 50D, but the 60D does not fit that spot. For it is not actually an upgrade in the most technical sense.

But wait, all things considered, it actually does fit the “spot” that Canon is marketing it for. Engineers have been functioning in overtime throughout the past year, and it is apparently paying off “in spades” as the Canon T2i and the Canon 7D have done extremely well against all competition.

It is quite interesting to look at the Canon 60D vs Rebel T2i in comparison. While both use the exact same sensor and processor, as well as the body construction, there are a few differences that make the newer camera worth the extra money.

Sample image from the Canon 60D

Canon has seemingly set an unstated goal to bring video to the Digital SLR market. The fact that Canon has made it a priority to get high quality video into their DSLR cameras is exhibited in all three releases in the entry and semi-pro level cameras having the exact same video capabilities. Actually, there is one more thing. The 60D has a new audio input capability which allows for better stereo input from two mics.

Other additions that appear to put the 60D into a category all its own include an articulating LCD panel. It is the first DSLR by Canon to have this feature. Video capture is made so much easier if it can be done without your eye having to be attached to the camera’s viewfinder.

Yet another advantage of the 60D vs T2i is the rate of image capture. The 60D can operate at 5.3 fps vs 3.7 fps in the Rebel model.

Are you one who has difficulty getting your photos straight? If so, the new electronic level in the viewfinder of the 60D will make your photographic life complete.

Cross-type focal points help the photographer to have more control over the composition of the image. While both cameras have nine focal points, only the 60D features each focal point as a cross-type auto focus point. The T2i has only one such cross-type auto focus point.

Add wireless flash control and improved control over the auto-ISO function, and that about rounds out the new and improved features.

Sample image from a Canon Rebel T2i

As first time buyer’s digital SLR, the Canon T2i is at the top of the heap right now. Excellent image quality is just one of many reasons for the popularity of the T2i. Just check the user satisfaction at the online stores to see that the Rebel T2i is among the best sellers in the digital SLR category. You just can’t miss if you decide to purchase one.

The Canon 60D, in comparison, may end up being in the same entry level category, since semi-pros might be put off by the “hybridization” of the new model, the more durable magnesium body construction (available in the 50D) being just one example.

So which digital SLR will you choose in the Canon 60D vs Canon T2i competition? Are you still on the fence? There is a side-by-side-by-side parallel view (including the 7D) at http://digital-photographic-resources.com/cameras/canon-mid-range.html

Canon Rebel XSi

First, allow me to set your mind at ease. There is no “best” camera at this basic DSLR entry level. Just make sure you stick with a major manufacturer like Canon.

But don’t despair. There are some GREAT cameras to choose from.

What you must do is settle within yourself what your priorities are in buying a new Digital Rebel.

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. But you probably already know. There is no Rebel X1i… yet.

I have no idea how these camera makers come up with their camera names, but it is certainly confusing, isn’t it?

There is a long line of Digital Rebels, beginning with the original Digital Rebel 300D. At that time, there were no 3 character combinations to remember like XSi, XT1, or JQ2. These letters are hard to keep in mind if you don’t already own one of the cameras they represent. One thing that has remained constant is the number system that Canon uses. It started with the Rebel 300D and each new entry has added 50. So there was the Digital Rebel 350D, 400D, and now we are up to the 500D which is the T1i.

So this article is really about whether you should buy a Digital Rebel 450D or 500D.

Historically, Canon has added to the Rebel line of cameras about every 2 years.

Each new entry has had some very significant upgrades from the previous model.

That is, until you get to the most recent offering, which hit the market only about a year after the previous version.

Pear Portrait

The result is, in many experts’ opinions, that the upgrades in the Rebel T1i are not enough to warrant an individual to buy the newest model.

Now, there are a couple of very valid reasons to buy the newer version of the Rebel:

You are buying your first DSLR, and you simply want the newest model you can get.

You want a DSLR that has video capture.

Money is no object for you, and you just want a decent backup camera.

I have checked with some very reliable sources to come to the conclusion that the previous version of Digital Rebel (the XSi) is a very reliable, well featured digital camera that takes photos that are considered among the best at this level and price range.

There are a few differences that I will note:

12.2 megapixels vs 15.1 megapixels (not significant at all considering the ability to print super large pictures from either)

DIGIC 4 processor vs DIGIC III processor (while the DIGIC 4 is better, unless you are a pixel prude, you will not be able to tell the difference)

3″ LCD with a resolution of about 930,000 pixels vs 3: LCD with a resolution of about 230,000 pixels (while this seems significant, what you see on the LCD panel should not drive your decision to purchase)

Creative Auto is available only on the newer model (this is a way to alter the output of your camera by added “photo filters” – some reviews have stated that the output is not consistent… I prefer to make these changes in photoshop or some other processing software)

Video Capture is available only on the newer model (while this may be a deciding factor for you, reviews have had mixed feelings about the video capabilities, especially the lack of a good sound recorder)

OK, that sounds like I am totally against the Digital Rebel T1i.

But it ain’t so.

Tiger Swallowtail

I think that both cameras would be a fantastic fit for anyone except the extreme amateur or the professional photographer.

Digital Rebels have always given their owners fantastic images. Mine certainly did. And these two cameras are no different. Both are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Hopefully you are better informed now than you were. Buying a new camera has always been an exciting venture for me. There are so many techy options and features that the pro reviewers look at. But in my opinion, it all boils down to this – will the camera do what you want it to do.

In this case, either the Rebel XSi or T1i will. There is more info at http://www.digital-photographic-resources.com, including product pictures and features.

I am also an amateur photographer. You can see some examples of my photography at http://www.thewayeyeseeit.net. Many of the pictures displayed are taken with a Rebel.

We love to go over there and have a Starbucks while browsing the magazines and books.

Well, I happened to pick up the newest copy of Consumer Reports and, guess what?

Their top pick for compact digital cameras was the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS!

Of course, that was not a shock to me. Rather, it was verification of what I have already reported in a couple of articles I have recently written, as well as on my website.

Users are pretty darn consistent in knowing what they like and what is quality. The buyers who have returned to their online store to leave feedback have let us know that they really like the Canon PowerShot SX200 IS.. to the tune of an average rating of 4.++ out of 5 at Amazon.com.

Just though you would like to know :=)

This is when all the newest products in the photography industry are announced. I am particularly interested in Canon’s two newest Powershot models, the Powershot SX200 IS and Powershot SX1 IS.

When I first discovered the digital camera, I spent over $300 for my little Olympus point-and-shoot. Now I can get a 12.2 megapixel Canon Powershot SX200 IS with many features that once were only available on the pro DSLR models for about $399. And if I want to go up another level to the Powershot SX1 IS, it will cost only another $100. I have done a comparison of the two models at squidoo.com. You can check them out for yourself at www.squidoo.com/canon-powershot-sx200-is. And if you are in the market for a new digital photography precision instrument, consider one of these.
