Hi Mojo,
Your friend is definitely in need of a new lens. Most photographers would agree about two things. First, the lens is just as important as the DSLR you attach it to. And second, the guy behind the camera is more important than the camera.
You can check my friend's website at http://imaging-resource.com/ for some very detailed lens reviews, however, there are no sample side-by-side pictures there. I have posted some samples of my new Sigma 18-250 all purpose lens here: http://digital-photographic-resources.com/cameras/walk-lens.html, and some very simple side-by-side samples here: http://digital-photographic-resources.com/blog/?p=150. Another place you can look is www.FredMiranda.com. There are lots of camera and lens reviews there.
One more thing, if your friend's Canon DSLR is only 3 years old, it is most probably a lens problem, however, it could be the camera. While this not likely, he should have the camera checked before he gives up on it. I am not aware of a Canon DSLR produced within the past 3 years that did not produce excellent image quality.
Thanks for stopping by.

Hey

So I've been trying to convince a friend that lenses make a difference. He has a DSLR (a canon from 3 years ago) but wants to buy a new camera because he isn't satisfied with the image quality.

Then I found out he exlusively uses this cheap chinese zoom lens for everything!

I'm trying to convince him that if he invested in a better lens he'd see a major improvement in image quality - but after doing some hunting around online, I can't find any good pictures that compare poor and high quality lenses with the same photos.

Do you have any, or can you recommend a site that has such a comparison? I've love to see some, and to convince my friend that all lenses are not created equal!

Thanks
